In a video, a person on a balcony presses a button on a remote control, causing a roof cover on a mini car below to retract automatically into a box. With another press, the cover unfolds and shields the top of the car.
The video, reposted by X user Dott. Orikron from Italy, has attracted over 2.2 million views. The original video comes from Mainiu Technologies, a Shenzhen-based startup founded in 2015 that specializes in portable and automatic car roof covers.
In the caption, Orikron writes, "Mainiu's automatic car cover is becoming popular in China to prevent cars from becoming ovens when parked outdoors in the summer".
Many of the over 350 comments agree on the usefulness of a car cover during hot summer days. Several users inquire about where to purchase the cover and its price.
Orikron includes a screenshot of an attempted purchase on AliExpress, showing a price of 336.39 EUR plus 50 EUR for shipping to Italy. Mainiu sells this sunshade on nearly every e-commerce platform in China.
Marketing materials claim the cover creates a 30°C temperature difference inside the car compared to outside. The open cover measures 4,800 x 2,300 mm, while folded it is 900 x 180 x 180 mm. It weighs 6.3 kg including the case.
Mainiu also states that the cover is remotely controlled and made of windproof, waterproof, and UV-resistant materials. Opening or closing takes about 8 seconds.
Some commenters express concerns about theft. However, Mainiu's product description mentions an anti-theft safety cable.
One comment points out that Tesla addressed this issue years ago without a cover.
Tesla's description of the feature on the Model 3 explains how the system prevents overheating in direct sunlight. While not needing activation every time someone exits the Model 3, the climate control system can lower and maintain the cabin temperature. This prevents overheating after parking in the sun, enhancing comfort upon return.
Instructions state that users can activate the feature and air conditioning when the cabin temperature exceeds 40°C or a chosen temperature, either on the touchscreen or the mobile app. A fan-only mode is also available to prevent surfaces from getting too hot.
Another question arises in Orikron's comments: "What happens if the device malfunctions and gets stuck?". This question remains unanswered. One user warns that the cover damaged the roof of their Lexus.
