Car dealership uses drone to deliver auto parts to avoid traffic

A Ford dealership in Michigan begins testing drone delivery of auto parts to shorten vehicle repair times for customers.

The Jack Demmer Automotive Group has launched a pilot program for drone parts delivery around the Detroit area. This initiative aims to significantly reduce customer service wait times by bypassing traffic congestion, a common challenge for urgent parts transport. Locals might spot drones carrying items like taillights or gear shifters.

The project received USD 740,000 in funding from the Michigan Advanced Aerial Mobility Activation Fund. This support enables the Jack Demmer Ford dealerships to deliver essential auto parts within a 19 km radius.

The first test flight took place on 25/8. A drone took off from the dealership, carrying a small package to the parking lot behind the Quick Lane Tire and Auto Center and its associated systems. Currently, staff must travel constantly between these two locations or use trucks for urgent parts needs. Using drones ensures transportation is unaffected by traffic congestion.

Although the initial flight covered a short distance, Jack Demmer expects to expand the model to other branches. These include the Lincoln dealership in Dearborn and a commercial vehicle center slated to open in 2027. While personnel from drone supplier Blueflite were present on-site during this trial, subsequent flights will be controlled entirely remotely.

The current payload is designed to meet a limit of 3,4 kg (25 kg including the drone itself).

Speaking to the Detroit Free Press, Tyler Bruder, Blueflite's business development director, stated the drones are equipped with emergency parachute systems and specifically designed to keep the cargo compartment stable.
