Jerry Ross, 72, was arrested after allegedly hitting two cyclists with his Honda Pilot on Sugar Pike Road in Cherokee County, Georgia, on 23/4, and then fleeing the scene. Ross reportedly honked loudly and attempted to overtake a group of 10 cyclists despite the road having only one lane per side, leading to the collision.
According to WSBTV, Scott Hager, one of the cyclists, stated, "He was very angry". A cell phone video captured the incident, showing the Pilot colliding with at least one cyclist. Crucially for investigators, the video also recorded the SUV's license plate, which proved vital in identifying the driver.
Police used the license plate information to track Ross to his home. Upon arrival, officers found damage on the vehicle's right side, consistent with the accident. When asked to view the video evidence, Ross reportedly refused, stating there was no need because he believed he hadn't done anything wrong.
In Georgia, the law grants cyclists the same right to use the road as motorists. Furthermore, drivers are legally required to maintain a minimum distance of one meter when overtaking a bicycle.
Ross now faces several charges stemming from the incident, including aggravated assault, hit and run, reckless driving, and failure to maintain a safe distance from a bicycle.
