Authorities in Dearborn, Michigan, are deploying "stealth" Ford Mustang Mach-E electric vehicles to combat reckless driving, leveraging their quiet operation to catch offenders unnoticed. Just one month after establishing a specialized task force, local police have already demonstrated the effectiveness of this innovative approach.
For motorists who have experienced being cut off, brake-checked, or worse in traffic, police often seem absent when needed. This is partly because traditional police vehicles are easily spotted from afar, not only due to their distinctive appearance but also their loud internal combustion engines, which readily alert drivers.

In a recent video recorded by officers from one of the Mustangs, a Ford F-250 driver treated a busy road like a private race track. The truck driver weaved through lanes, cutting off other motorists, sometimes without using turn signals.
The Ford was subsequently pulled over by police. While the Dearborn Police Department did not disclose the specific charges the driver faces, a first-time offender for reckless driving can face penalties such as a deduction of 6 license points, a fine up to 500 USD, imprisonment for up to 93 days, or both jail time and a fine.

City authorities state that reckless and aggressive driving is one of the most pressing issues in Dearborn. The Ford vehicles issued to this task force feature a minimalist appearance, combined with a quiet electric motor, allowing police to easily monitor driver behavior without attracting attention.
Authorities believe this solution will expose drivers who "only behave when they see police"—a group that typically adheres to rules only when traditional patrol cars are visible.
When announcing the program, Dearborn Police Chief Issa Shahin stated that traffic safety complaints have become a persistent concern for local residents.
