Competitors offer refunds to lure Xiaomi EV buyers

Rival brands are offering to cover the 5,000 CNY deposit forfeited when canceling a Xiaomi order.

The standard version of the Xiaomi YU7 currently has a 60-week delivery timeframe, while other versions have a 33-week wait. This extensive lead time has prompted some customers to consider canceling their orders, creating an opportunity that competing automakers are actively exploiting.

Rival electric vehicle brands, including Zeekr, Nio, and IM Motors, have launched campaigns targeting Xiaomi customers reconsidering their purchase due to the long wait. They are offering to reimburse the entire 5,000 CNY (700 USD) deposit that customers would lose if they canceled their Xiaomi order.

Screenshots circulating online show Zeekr sales representatives assuring potential customers that they "need not worry about losing their deposit" and even providing instructions on how to cancel their Xiaomi orders. Similarly, Nio sales representatives have been seen in comment sections, suggesting that the Xiaomi deposit can be directly transferred towards purchasing a Nio vehicle.

This competitive tactic is not entirely new. Reports indicate that similar strategies emerged in 4/2025 when the Xiaomi SU7 was released. At that time, Avatr reportedly displayed in-store posters with slogans indicating they would cover the losses of customers who canceled their Xiaomi orders.

In response to these challenges and growing customer frustration, Xiaomi's chairman, Lei Jun, announced a limited-time configuration change option for YU7 customers. From 10 a.m. on 6/7 to midnight on 7/7, customers who have placed orders (excluding those eligible for immediate delivery) can modify their vehicle configurations or switch between the standard, Pro, and Max versions of the YU7. Lei noted that successful configuration changes will lead to adjustments in the production schedule and updated estimated delivery times.

This isn't the first time Xiaomi has accommodated customer requests for configuration changes. Lei previously explained that while orders are typically unmodifiable after confirmation, the company decided to allow changes after receiving numerous requests from customers who felt they had rushed their initial choices.
