After unexpectedly canceling plans to launch three new models in North America (including two electric vehicles), Honda is accelerating its roadmap for the next generation of hybrid vehicles. The CR-V will be the first model to adopt this technology.
The Japanese automaker has dedicated significant time to upgrading its hybrid powertrain, which will replace configurations currently used in models like the Accord, Civic, CR-V, HR-V, and Prelude. Honda expects new models to launch earlier than planned, beginning with the CR-V Hybrid. This model will enter production in Canada in February 2027 before expanding to the US.

According to Nikkei Asia, the new hybrid powertrain improves fuel efficiency by over 10% compared to current systems, while also reducing production costs by up to 30%.
At the core of the fifth-generation hybrid system is a 2,0-liter 4-cylinder direct-injection gasoline engine, combined with two new electric motors. Similar to the Prelude, models using this system will integrate an s+ shift feature to simulate gear changes.
Beyond powertrain upgrades, the CR-V and subsequent models will also be developed on a new-generation mid-size chassis platform set to debut in late 2025. This combination reduces vehicle weight by 90 kg compared to the previous generation. The new chassis design also offers greater flexibility due to optimized bending.
Additionally, Honda will equip a motion management system across its product range. This system uses a 6-axis inertial measurement unit (imu) sensor to analyze and control yaw angle, subtly intervening in braking force and electric motor torque to optimize driving performance.
Honda's push for hybrid models comes after the company recorded significant losses from its electric vehicle segment and canceled numerous models, including some that had not yet entered production. The Japanese automaker has completely abandoned its plan to sell only electric vehicles by 2040 and has decided to double down on hybrids.
