After four years on the market, the Lexus RX, a mid-size luxury SUV, is preparing for a mid-cycle refresh. Recent spy shots indicate the Japanese automaker is concentrating on exterior refinements and significant interior updates.
The RX 2028 was recently spotted undergoing road tests, its front end heavily camouflaged. Carscoops suggests this signals a significant step before Lexus officially introduces its best-selling model.

The RX 2028 is expected to debut in late 2027.
With its current appealing design, the RX's facelift focuses on significant changes, particularly at the front. The camouflaged front end suggests a redesign of the grille, often considered a signature element of the Japanese luxury brand.
While the exterior remains obscured by decals, US media anticipate subtle alterations to the grille's pattern and structure. The front bumper and air intakes will also be refined for improved aerodynamics. Notably, the headlight clusters on the test vehicle retain their current shape. However, Lexus will likely update the internal led graphics to give the production model a fresher appearance.
In contrast to the minor exterior revisions, the interior promises substantial advancements. Images quickly taken through the windshield reveal the RX 2028 will move away from its current integrated central screen design, adopting a more modern floating display instead.
This new layout mirrors the design language found in the Lexus ES sedan and the recently introduced TZ large SUV. It aims to optimize display space and create a more streamlined dashboard. Furthermore, Lexus will likely enhance the control system, incorporating a physical volume knob below the screen and touch-sensitive surfaces for temperature control, thereby offering more convenient and intuitive operation.

The new RX will retain its existing powertrain options, which offer a balanced blend of performance and fuel efficiency. The standard model features a 2,4L turbocharged gasoline engine producing 275 horsepower. The RX 500h F Sport model comes with a hybrid engine delivering 366 horsepower. The RX 350h and 450h+ (PHEV) variants utilize a 2,5L gasoline engine paired with an electric motor.
The Lexus RX 2028 is scheduled for launch in late 2027.
As a highly successful model in Lexus's mid-size luxury SUV segment, the RX's limited exterior changes suggest a strategy to preserve its strong brand identity. This approach also reflects Lexus's responsiveness to customer feedback by prioritizing interior enhancements.
