According to a traffic management plan recently approved by the Vietnam Road Administration, the maximum speed limit on both lanes of the Phan Thiet - Dau Giay expressway is 120 km/h. However, the minimum speed for lane one, adjacent to the median strip, is now 80 km/h, while lane two has a minimum speed of 60 km/h. These regulations took effect on 12/10.
This change reduces the speed gap in lane one from the previous 60-120 km/h range to 80-120 km/h. This adjustment aims to curb left-lane hogging, which often forces vehicles to frequently change lanes, leading to conflicts and traffic disruption on the expressway.
With the same objective, the Vietnam Road Administration, in conjunction with the Traffic Police Department, recently adjusted speed limits on other expressways. The left lane of the Hanoi - Hai Phong expressway now permits speeds of 100-120 km/h, while the Cau Gie - Cao Bo expressway allows 80-100 km/h.

On both expressways, trucks over 7,5 tons and passenger buses with more than 29 seats must use lane two under normal conditions, only moving to the left lane to overtake before returning to lane two. This regulation clearly defines the minimum speeds for the two lanes. Vehicles in the left lane should maintain a speed of 80 km/h or higher when traffic permits, while the right lane has a lower minimum speed to accommodate slower-moving vehicles.
In conjunction with revising maximum and minimum speed limits, the Vietnam Road Administration is optimizing infrastructure, while the Traffic Police Department will implement enforcement measures. These efforts aim to thoroughly address issues such as left-lane hogging and failure to maintain safe following distances on expressways.
