The CX-5 is currently Mazda's best-selling model, having reached the 5 million unit mark by late 2025 after 14 years on the market. However, the Japanese automaker underestimated the new generation's sales growth, receiving over 10,000 orders in its home market during the first month of sales alone.
This figure is five times higher than Mazda's initial expectation of 2,000 vehicles per month. This success indicates that customers are convinced by the third-generation CX-5's design language and optimized interior space. The company reported a diverse customer base, ranging from young first-time buyers to older customers.
Initial sales data reveals a clear consumer trend towards prioritizing premium features. The flagship L trim accounted for 65% of total orders, while the mid-range G trim made up 32%. The standard S trim garnered only 3% of sales.

Regarding personalization options, although red is the signature launch color, 25% of customers were willing to pay an additional 55,000 yen (approximately 340 USD) for white paint. Inside the cabin, the brown leather upholstery option also proved popular, featured on nearly 40% of L trim vehicles.
The new CX-5's strong appeal came as a surprise, as the vehicle had previously drawn complaints for the removal of physical climate control buttons and the absence of a hybrid configuration at launch. However, these perceived drawbacks seemingly did not deter buyers.
According to Mazda, customers highly value the spacious rear seats, wide-opening doors that simplify child seat installation, and the ability to fold the rear seats flat, transforming the cabin into a makeshift bed. The 15,6-inch central infotainment screen, featuring a new interface, also received positive feedback.
In the Japanese market, the new generation Mazda CX-5 is currently offered exclusively with an e-SkyActiv 2.5L mild-hybrid gasoline engine, paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission and available with either front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive.
Prices for the vehicle range from 3,300,000 to 4,306,500 yen (20,400-26,700 USD). In the C-segment crossover category, the Mazda CX-5 directly competes with rivals such as the Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V, and Subaru Forester.
