Toyota Camry drops gasoline variant, sells only hybrid in Vietnam

Toyota discontinues the 2.0 Q internal combustion engine variant, retaining the 2.5 HEV TOP hybrid version priced at 1,46 billion dong.

Toyota Vietnam has confirmed this information. The gasoline-powered Camry 2.0 Q, priced at 1,22 billion dong, was officially imported from Thailand. The company will now only retain the 2.5 HEV TOP hybrid variant, priced at 1,46 billion dong.

Despite its higher price, hybrid vehicles offer several advantages over gasoline cars, such as a smoother ride and better fuel efficiency. The Japanese automaker stated that hybrid vehicles receive special consumption tax incentives in Vietnam, prompting its strategy to gradually shift towards hybrids. The company plans to introduce an intermediate Camry variant with a hybrid engine and a more affordable price than the current offering.

The Camry is a D-segment sedan, competing directly with only the Kia K5 in its category. Previously, this segment included the Honda Accord and Mazda Mazda6, both of which have ceased distribution in Vietnam. The K5, assembled in Vietnam, is available in three variants, priced from 769 to 935 million dong. The most affordable K5 variant is nearly half the price of the Camry.

The Camry hybrid currently sold in Vietnam is from the 9th generation, which debuted at the Vietnam Motor Show 2024. The Camry 2.5 HEV TOP features a 2.5 gasoline engine (185 horsepower, 221 Nm peak torque), combined with an electric motor (134 horsepower, 208 Nm torque). The vehicle's total output is 224 horsepower, paired with an e-CVT transmission and front-wheel drive.

The Camry's exterior features prominent C-shaped headlights, inspired by the Prius hybrid model. The signature inverted trapezoidal grille is narrower on this version, not extending into the two air intakes as on the previous model. The taillights share a similar design but are not connected.

The new-generation Camry's interior maintains a modern style, with button clusters now arranged more neatly and logically. The gear selector and cup holders remain in their previous positions. The steering wheel has a new design, and function buttons are rearranged. The sunroof in the new-generation Camry is panoramic.

The seats are largely unchanged from the previous generation, with only a black interior option available for this variant. The steering wheel is redesigned, appearing more angular, and the buttons for active safety features and infotainment are reorganized. The car also includes paddle shifters behind the steering wheel.

A prominent interior feature is the 12,3-inch driver display, offering crisp, clear information. The vehicle comes standard with a 10-inch head-up display. Below the 12,3-inch infotainment screen, the air conditioning controls are neatly aligned, seamlessly integrating with small monochrome screens displaying status information. Below these are the air conditioning vents.

Within its segment, the Camry has maintained the highest and most stable sales over several years, dominating competitors in market share. However, the overall sales volume for this segment is declining, gradually placing it among the lowest-selling segments in the market.

Since the beginning of the year, 389 Camry units have been sold, while its competitor, the Kia K5, has not disclosed sales figures since 2026.
