The officer reprimanded the woman in front of onlookers after slapping her. The officer, identified as Pranita Musne, stopped the motorcycle and cited reckless and unsafe driving.
The video, shared on social media on 23/6, sparked public outrage and criticism of the officer's actions. On 24/6, Musne told the Times of India (TOI) that she has been with the traffic police for over two years. She was on her way to work after dropping her daughter off at tutoring when she saw three young women on one motorcycle.
"I saw three women on a two-wheeler, one of them wasn't sitting properly, and they were driving recklessly. When I asked them to drive more safely, they told me to mind my own business," Musne said.
Musne said the women continued to drive carelessly until a bus blocked their path. She then got out of her vehicle, confronted the women, and slapped one of them.
"I acted like a mother at that moment, not a police officer," Musne said. "My language was wrong, and I sincerely apologize to the women and their parents. But my intentions weren't wrong."
Carrying three people on a motorcycle violates traffic laws in India and many other countries. Despite being aware of the rule, many people still break it. Often, those who violate passenger limits also fail to wear helmets, increasing the risk of serious injury in an accident.
However, slapping a traffic violator is wrong. The local police department has not yet commented on the incident.
