Three spectators were injured in a racing incident at Senoia Raceway on the evening of 5/7, according to a statement from the racetrack. "Medical personnel responded immediately and the individuals involved were transported to a nearby hospital for further evaluation. We are informed that all are alert and receiving care." The victims were released from the hospital on 6/7.
Michael Greene, who filmed the accident, said he was recording the lively atmosphere for his father when the race car veered off the track. "The car climbed the wall, grinding it like a skateboard in the blink of an eye," Greene said. He noted the situation could have been much worse, but fortunately the fence did its job and kept the race car from flying directly into the stands. Greene saw two fence posts ripped from the ground in the collision.
Many people habitually stand close to the fence to get a closer look at the roaring race cars at high speeds, but this practice carries significant risks. With the immense momentum, just a slight error in the driver's handling can send the car careening out of control, potentially breaching the fence and injuring those standing or sitting nearby.
