Race car flies over barrier, shatters into pieces

The driver narrowly escaped death after his Porsche suffered brake failure, launching over a barrier and tumbling down a slope at Laguna Seca’s infamous Corkscrew turn in California.

The incident occurred last weekend when American driver Manuel Gil Del Real was competing for third place in the opening round of the Porsche Sprint Challenge North America, held at the Laguna Seca racetrack in California. His Porsche appeared to experience a brake failure just before entering the Corkscrew, one of the most challenging turns in motorsport globally.

The car became airborne, flipped over, and flew through tire barriers and protective netting before rolling down a narrow slope and overturning.

Porsche Motorsport North America representatives later confirmed the driver remained conscious when transported to the hospital. Spectators and photographers at the scene fortunately sustained no injuries.

The extensive damage to the barrier system caused the main IndyCar race organizers to postpone their practice session for over one hour for repairs.

The Corkscrew is world-renowned for its steep downhill gradient immediately following a blind crest. Drivers navigate a vertical drop equivalent to a five and a half-story building within a short 140-meter section. This turn has been the site of numerous severe accidents due to stuck throttles or brake failures, including the 1999 crash that claimed the life of IndyCar driver Gonzalo Rodriguez.
