Hyundai Staria Electric - electric minivan rivals Volkswagen ID. Buzz

The 9-seat Hyundai Staria Electric charges from 10-80% in 20 minutes and boasts a lower starting price than its rival, the Volkswagen ID. Buzz, in the European market.

The Hyundai Staria Electric launched in South Korea earlier this year alongside its mid-cycle refresh. This space-inspired vehicle has now arrived in Europe, directly competing with the Volkswagen ID. Buzz. The Staria is larger, offering more spacious interior room for both passengers and luggage.

To distinguish the Staria Electric from its gasoline and hybrid variants, one can observe the front fascia. The redesigned front bumper conceals the grille behind a flat panel, which integrates the charging port and automatic air intake shutters at the bottom. It also features aerodynamic wheels and a unique identification logo on the tailgate.

Measuring 5,253 mm in length, the Staria surpasses the ID. Buzz and Kia PV5 in size. This model is also larger than the standard versions of the Ford E-Tourneo Custom, VW e-Caravelle, Peugeot e-Traveller, Citroen e-Spacetourer, Opel Zafira-e Life, and Fiat E-Ulysse, though shorter than the long-wheelbase variants of these rivals. A similar scenario applies when comparing it to the premium Mercedes VLE.

Extensive features

In Europe, the Staria Electric is available in three trims: Trend, Prime, and Calligraphy. The standard Trend trim includes full led headlights, a dual 12,3-inch display, an infotainment screen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, heated front seats, parking sensors, a rearview camera, an advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) package, and a 9-seat configuration across three rows.

An optional driver assistance package adds navigation, highway driving assist, and a V2L power converter. Meanwhile, the premium package includes power sliding doors and tailgate, sliding windows, sunshades, sound- and heat-insulated privacy glass, and wireless charging. All these features are standard on the Prime trim. This trim also gains leather seats, ventilated front seats, and an optional front sunroof and fixed panoramic sunroof for the second row.

The top-tier Calligraphy trim features a 7-seat configuration, highlighted by two business-class seats in the second row with heating, ventilation, and a relaxation mode. This flagship model also includes premium interior lighting, Bose audio, a 360-degree camera, a suede headliner, Nappa leather, and a system for observing and conversing with rear passengers.

Externally, the Calligraphy trim is distinguished by a unique front bumper housing larger projector-beam headlights, parametric pixel led taillights extending close to the roofline, and an exclusive red paint finish.

Spacious for 9 occupants and luggage

The 9-seat version offers a luggage capacity of 1,303 liters behind the third row, complemented by a 24-liter frunk for charging cables. The vehicle has a towing capacity of 2,000 kg and a maximum payload of 750 kg.

A single electric motor powers the front axle, producing 215 horsepower. An 84 kWh battery provides a maximum range of 430 km on a full charge, according to WLTP standards. Thanks to its 800 V electrical architecture, the Staria Electric can charge from 10-80% in approximately 20 minutes using a DC fast-charging station. It also comes standard with a heat pump and battery heating system.

Pricing in Germany

In Germany, the Hyundai Staria Electric starts at 57,450 EUR (66,800 USD) for the Trend trim, 63,650 EUR (74,000 USD) for the Prime trim, and 66,950 EUR (77,800 USD) for the Calligraphy trim. The optional driver assistance and premium packages each cost 2,100 EUR (2,400 USD), while the panoramic sunroof package is 1,300 EUR (1,500 USD).

For comparison, the rival VW ID. Buzz Pro long-wheelbase variant with an 86 kWh battery starts at 57,887 EUR (67,300 USD) in the same market. Meanwhile, the VW e-Caravelle short-wheelbase version with a 70,9 kWh battery is priced from 66,080 EUR (76,800 USD).
