The Genesis GV80 hybrid, a luxury suv, has been introduced in South Korea. It features an all-new hybrid powertrain, promising high operational performance and improved fuel efficiency compared to its internal combustion engine counterparts.
Similar to other hybrid models within the Hyundai Motor Group, such as the Kia Telluride hybrid and Hyundai Palisade hybrid, the Genesis GV80 hybrid utilizes a 2,5-liter 4-cylinder turbocharged gasoline engine. However, Genesis distinguishes this model by equipping it with an exclusive water-cooled battery pack, rather than the more common air-cooled system.

The GV80 hybrid features an exclusive water-cooled battery pack.
The South Korean automaker states this technology provides more effective battery temperature control, enabling higher power discharge and optimizing battery energy usage during operation.
The GV80's hybrid system comprises an internal combustion engine, a starter motor, and a main drive motor that performs two functions: transmitting power to the wheels and recovering energy during braking (regenerative braking).
The GV80 hybrid's combined powertrain output reaches 347 horsepower and 530 Nm of torque. This power is sent to the rear wheels via a new 7-speed automatic transmission. As a result, the crossover can accelerate from 0-100 km/h in just 7,1 seconds.
For comparison, the current GV80 2.5 turbo variant uses a 2,5-liter turbocharged gasoline engine, producing 300 horsepower and 421 Nm of torque. Thus, the hybrid version is not only significantly more powerful but is also expected to improve fuel efficiency by over 25%.
To maximize efficiency and reduce low-speed noise, the GV80 hybrid utilizes an all-electric drive mode (ev mode) upon startup. This mode remains active until the vehicle reaches approximately 30 km/h. The car is also programmed to prioritize ev mode use in congested traffic or during frequent stops at red lights.
Additionally, Genesis states that the final drive ratio on the GV80 hybrid has been adjusted lower than the 2.5 turbo version to minimize cabin noise. Technology for reducing torsional and bending vibrations in the engine crankshaft damper pulley is also applied to suppress engine noise.
Other notable features include: using an electric motor for reversing and a smart regenerative braking system. This system automatically adjusts optimal regenerative braking intensity based on data from the navigation system, including speed camera locations and distances between vehicles.

Premium leather seats, plus four new two-tone interior options.
Externally, the hybrid version features subtle refinements with a new grille and wheel design. The GV80 hybrid's interior offers four new two-tone options, with primary colors being: obsidian black, taiga green, ultramarine blue, and travertine beige. Additionally, customers have two new real wood trim choices.
The Genesis GV80 hybrid is expected to officially arrive at dealerships in South Korea in September. Information regarding pricing and distribution plans for other markets will be announced later.
