Xiaomi recalls electric vehicles over self-driving safety concerns

The electric vehicle manufacturer is recalling 116,887 SU7 Standard Edition vehicles due to concerns about the safety of its assisted driving mode.

The affected vehicles were manufactured between 6/2/2024 and 30/8/2025. The recall notice was submitted to the State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) on 19/9.

The company highlighted potential safety risks related to the Level 2 assisted driving feature on highways. In certain situations, when the automated driving feature is activated, the system may not adequately identify, warn about, or react to unusual traffic situations. This deficiency could increase the risk of a collision if the driver does not intervene in time.

Xiaomi plans to address the issue through free over-the-air (OTA) software updates for vehicle owners. The company will notify affected customers via text messages and its mobile application.

In late March of this year, three people died in a traffic accident while driving a Xiaomi SU7. The vehicle was reportedly in self-driving mode at the time. According to CarNewsChina, the recall is a response to this incident, as the vehicle involved was a Xiaomi SU7 Standard Edition. China is also preparing to implement stricter mandatory standards for Level 2 autonomous vehicles.

Recently, another Chinese automaker, Xpeng, also issued a recall for its P7+ model. Previously, there were suspicions that vehicle recalls were rare in the Chinese auto industry. However, this practice appears to be becoming more common.

Xiaomi launched its SU7 electric vehicle in late 2023. The "SU" stands for Speed Ultra, emphasizing the sedan's performance, with Xiaomi's stated ambition to compete directly with the Porsche Taycan. The vehicle is available in three versions, with prices starting at 29,900 USD.

As of the end of August, cumulative sales of the SU7 reached 339,421 units, accounting for 88.96% of Xiaomi's total electric vehicle sales, according to data compiled by CnEVPost. This means the recalled vehicles represent approximately 33% of the units sold.
