This information was shared by Tezuka Daisuke, General Director of Aeon Vietnam, at a press conference on the afternoon of 10/9. Over the next two months, Aeon plans to open three major shopping malls in Hai Phong, Thanh Hoa, and Quang Ninh. Specifically, Aeon Hai Duong (Thach Khoi ward, Hai Phong) will launch early next month, with an investment capital of nearly 1,200 billion dong and a scale of 35,700 m2.

Overall for this year, Aeon is opening 5 new shopping malls, marking its most significant expansion in 12 years of retail operations in Vietnam. "This is our fastest pace of new store openings in the Vietnamese market to date," an Aeon Vietnam executive stated.

Aeon opened its first shopping mall in Vietnam in 2014, adopting a cautious approach. During its first 10 years, it launched only 8 shopping malls and centers, focusing on major cities. The pace of new openings has gradually increased since 2024, reaching its highest level this year.

Last month, Nikkei reported that Aeon divested its entire business in Thailand to focus resources on Vietnam.

Tezuka Daisuke observed that the Vietnamese market still offers significant room for the Japanese retail group to grow. He stated that the group plans to allocate 60% of its total investment capital in Southeast Asia to the Vietnamese market. Additionally, the retailer is deploying human resources from Japan to provide support, while also expanding payment services, lending, cinemas, and more. For its supermarket model alone, it plans to open up to 300 stores, an increase from the current 40.

Last year, Aeon Vietnam achieved a revenue of 624 million USD, 2.5 times higher than the figures from six years prior. By 2030, they expect revenue to triple and profit to quadruple, aiming to become the number one retailer in the country within the next decade.

As of August, the Japanese retail giant operates 25 shopping malls and general merchandise stores, 40 supermarkets, 71 specialty stores, and 182 convenience stores in Vietnam. The group also entered the pharmaceutical retail segment, opening two pharmacies in TP HCM.
