Airlines increase checked baggage fees before peak summer

Starting May 20, the cost of air travel for many passengers may rise as Vietjet Air and Bamboo Airways simultaneously increase checked baggage prices ahead of the summer travel season.

Vietjet Air has announced an increase in fees for additional baggage purchased after booking on both domestic and international routes, according to a new price list sent to agents. Bamboo Airways will apply higher prices during peak summer and Tet (Lunar New Year) periods.

In the domestic market, the common increase is around 15-25%, depending on the service package. For Vietjet Air, a 20 kg baggage package rose 25% from 200,000 VND to 250,000 VND. The 30 kg package increased 20% from 300,000 VND to 360,000 VND, and the 40 kg package also increased 20% from 400,000 VND to 480,000 VND. These amounts do not include value added tax (VAT).

Vietjet Air also increased prices for several other services. Oversized baggage weighing 20 kg rose 20% from 450,000 VND to 540,000 VND. The priority carry-on service, which adds 2 kg, increased over 21% from 230,000 VND to 280,000 VND.

Bamboo Airways adjusted its domestic baggage price list for two phases: "all year" and "peak summer, Tet." During the peak period, Bamboo Airways uniformly increased domestic baggage fees by approximately 15,4%. For example, the 10 kg package increased from 130,000 VND to 150,000 VND, the 20 kg package from 260,000 VND to 300,000 VND, and the 60 kg package from 780,000 VND to 900,000 VND.

According to Bamboo Airways, the peak summer period applies from May 20 to August 15 and from August 27 to September 2. The peak Tet period runs from late December 2025 to mid-March 2026.

For international routes, Vietjet also adjusted baggage fees on many segments. A 20 kg package to Southeast Asia increased from 480,000 VND to 580,000 VND. The Hong Kong, Taiwan, and China group saw an increase from 580,000 VND to 700,000 VND, both rising by nearly 21%.

Some checked baggage fee increases from May 20:

Airline Route/Package Old Price New Price
Vietjet Air Domestic 20kg 200,000 250,000
Vietjet Air Domestic 30kg 300,000 360,000
Vietjet Air Southeast Asia 20 kg 480,000 580,000
Vietjet Air Hong Kong/Taiwan/China 30 kg 880,000 1,100,000

A representative from an airline ticket agency in TP HCM noted that airlines have kept basic fares competitive to attract customers in recent years. However, with rising fuel and operating costs, many airlines have adjusted fares and increased revenue from ancillary services like checked baggage, seat selection, and meals.

"Previously, customers only looked at the ticket price, but now they must add baggage costs to get the actual total cost. For families or those traveling for extended periods, baggage fees can add millions of VND per trip," the representative said.

Baggage fees typically fluctuate seasonally, increasing significantly during peak summer and Tet periods when travel demand rises sharply, according to agents.

A recent report from the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV) indicated that international Jet A1 fuel prices remain high due to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. At times, Jet A1 prices in Asia reached approximately 214-216 USD a barrel, placing significant pressure on airline operating costs.

The CAAV states that fuel price fluctuations contribute to increased aviation operating costs, impacting overall airfare levels recently. The total cost of air travel continues to trend upward, as passengers must spend more on ancillary services in addition to the ticket price. Fewer low-fare tickets are available, especially on tourist routes and the Hanoi - TP HCM corridor.

During holidays, Tet, or peak summer, ticket prices on many domestic routes often increase sharply. Agents believe that when baggage and ancillary charges are added, the total cost for a flight continues to be pushed to high levels.
