Counterfeit cleaning products lead to $180 million VND fine for Vietnamese company

Authorities in Hung Yen province fined a company 180 million VND for counterfeiting D-nee and Hygiene cleaning products. All counterfeit goods were destroyed.

During a recent crackdown on counterfeit goods, authorities in Hung Yen province discovered that H.V. Trading and Service Investment Co., Ltd. was producing a range of counterfeit cleaning products. The company operates in two communes, An Thi and Yen My.

Inside the production facility, hundreds of containers of laundry detergent, dish soap, and fabric softener were found. These were mixed from chemicals of unknown origin and labeled with well-known brands such as D-nee, Hygiene, and Tauau.

The company's director purchased authentic products, analyzed their ingredients, and then replicated them in their own factory. Not only were the chemicals copied, but also the labels, packaging, and cartons were duplicated to deceive consumers. Details like barcodes and foreign origin markings were also counterfeited.

In 5/2024, authorities raided the company's production warehouse, uncovering a large-scale operation. Machinery, packaging, and labels in the process of being packaged were seized. The case was transferred to the Hung Yen provincial police. In 9/2024, the company owner and an accomplice were prosecuted for "producing counterfeit goods."

Some evidence was insufficient for criminal prosecution and was transferred to the local Market Management Department for administrative penalties. The Hung Yen People's Committee (UBND) fined the company 180 million VND and ordered the destruction of all counterfeit goods under Decree 98.
