DHL and CMA CGM partner to advance marine biofuel

DHL and CMA CGM launch a joint biofuel initiative to accelerate CO2 emission reduction in maritime transport.

Under a new agreement, DHL and French shipping and logistics group CMA CGM will jointly acquire 8,990 tons of second-generation biofuel. This initiative is projected to reduce approximately 25,000 tons of CO2 emissions compared to conventional marine fuels, forming part of DHL's GoGreen Plus service.

Both DHL's GoGreen Plus and CMA CGM's ACT+ programs empower customers to integrate sustainable shipping solutions into their logistics chains. ACT+, for instance, helps shippers reduce their shipment's carbon footprint by 10%, 25%, 50%, or even 83%, covering the journey from production to consumption.

CMA CGM will directly refuel its fleet with the biofuel, ensuring emission reductions align with DHL's "book and claim" mechanism. This system allows DHL to substitute fossil fuels with sustainable alternatives across its logistics network, distributing environmental benefits to paying customers even if their cargo is not transported directly by green-fueled vessels.

"This marks another milestone in our mission to build a low-carbon supply chain," stated Casper Ellerbaek, Global Head of Ocean Freight at DHL Global Forwarding. "Leveraging sustainable marine fuel helps customers meet their climate goals and drives genuine decarbonization efforts."

Olivier Nivoix, Executive Vice President of Ocean Shipping at CMA CGM Group, also highlighted that the partnership with DHL "underscores the vital role of collaboration in accelerating the transition to low-carbon maritime transport."

Beyond this latest initiative, both companies affirmed their commitment to exploring further opportunities for expanding the use of low-emission fuels and developing collaborative models to decarbonize international supply chains.

This partnership follows a three-year framework agreement signed in October between DHL Global Forwarding and Hapag-Lloyd, which aims to reduce Scope 3 emissions by utilizing sustainable marine fuel across Hapag-Lloyd's fleet.
