The new facility will serve a crucial role in managing airport operations, including conducting security checks on all goods entering the airside restricted area. This area facilitated 17,5 million passenger movements in 2025. From this center, GXO will also perform safety checks and distribute all items sold within the terminal, encompassing luxury fashion, perfumes, cosmetics, consumer electronics, and supplies for the airport's various shops and restaurants. This operation extends to controlling shipments essential for critical airside activities.
This initiative is set to benefit airport businesses significantly. They are expected to gain from real-time tracking and tracing alerts, a direct communication channel with the center, 24/7 incident support, and improved on-time delivery performance, streamlining their daily operations.
Neil Thompson, chief operating officer of London Luton Airport, highlighted the strategic importance of the new center. According to Thompson, the consolidation center "provides London Luton Airport with a smarter, more efficient, and leaner logistics management method, helping to process hundreds of thousands of items delivered to over 40 shops and restaurants at the airport each year".

In a move to enhance operational transparency and efficiency, GXO will deploy a custom-designed information technology system named STREAM (Secure, Technical, Real Time, Electronic Alerts and Messaging). This system is specifically developed to track, report, and manage service metrics, driving continuous improvement across logistics processes.
Martin Cooper, GXO's managing director for technology and consumer in the UK and Ireland, expressed his enthusiasm for the collaboration. "We are pleased to partner with London Luton in rolling out the airport's first consolidation center," Cooper stated. He further emphasized the growing relevance of such facilities, adding, "As air travel demand continues to rise, consolidation centers play a pivotal role in enhancing operational efficiency and improving sustainability for airport management."
The consolidation center is strategically located within one of three former aircraft hangars at London Luton Airport. These hangars have undergone extensive renovation as part of an 11,5 million GBP upgrade program, transforming them into a modern logistics hub.
