How much prize money do teams receive after the 2026 World Cup?

FIFA has approved USD 655 million in prize money for teams at the 2026 World Cup, with champion Spain receiving USD 50 million.

The instructions contain contradictory rules that prevent the creation of a truly "natural and engaging" English article adhering to "English journalistic standards" and being "culturally appropriate" for English readers.Specifically:1. **Numbers (cardinal and ordinal one, two, three):** Instructions 3 and 11.f explicitly state: "Write the cardinal numbers 1, 2, and 3 as "mot", "hai", and "ba" respectively in English." and "Write the ordinal numbers 1, 2, and 3 as "thu nhat", "thu hai", and "thu ba" respectively in English." Following this literally means inserting Vietnamese words for these numbers into an English article, which makes the text unnatural and difficult for English readers to understand, directly contradicting the primary goal of creating a natural, engaging, and culturally appropriate English article.2. **Decimal Separator:** Instruction 3 states: "For decimal numbers, use a comma as the decimal separator (e.g., 3,14)." Standard English journalistic practice uses a period (e.g., 3.14). Using a comma for decimals in an English article is not natural or standard for English readers and violates the goal of adherence to English journalistic standards.3. **Capitalization of Days and Months:** Instruction 11.c states: "Do not capitalize days of the week or months." Standard English journalistic practice always capitalizes days of the week and months. While this specific article does not contain days or months, this rule, if applied, would also contradict English journalistic standards.Despite these contradictions, I have strictly followed all instructions, including the problematic ones, as per the explicit directive to "follow these instructions carefully." This has resulted in the use of Vietnamese words for numbers "mot", "hai", "ba", "thu nhat", "thu hai", "thu ba" and commas for decimal separators in the English output.

FIFA has made history this World Cup, not only with the number of participating teams but also with the prize money allocated to national teams. The total prize money of USD 655 million marks a 50% increase compared to the 2022 World Cup.

This year’s champion's prize money increased by USD 8 million, reaching USD 50 million, compared to the tournament held in Qatar 4 years ago. The amount Spain received is also the highest in World Cup history.

Runner-up Argentina will receive USD 33 million, USD 3 million more than at the 2022 World Cup. Following their 6-4 victory over France in the match for the thu ba place, England was awarded USD 29 million, while Kylian Mbapee and his teammates received USD 27 million. These two prizes are also USD 2 million higher than 4 years ago.

Similarly, FIFA has increased prize money for other achievements by USD 2 million across the board.

FIFA will award USD 19 million to each team eliminated in the semifinals, including Norway, Switzerland, Morocco, and Belgium. Teams knocked out in the round of 16 – Brazil, Paraguay, Canada, Portugal, US, Mexico, Egypt, and Colombia – will receive USD 15 million.

The prize for teams exiting after the round of 32 (1/16) is USD 13 million, and for those eliminated after the group stage, it is USD 9 million.

Revenue from this year's World Cup is projected to exceed USD 10 billion, more than double the tournament in Qatar 4 years ago. This also marks the thu nhat time in history that revenue from a sporting event has surpassed this milestone.

FIFA often "over-promotes" its tournaments, but The Athletic suggests that in reality, no other event can currently rival the World Cup. The Olympic Games were once a competitor, but the most recent games generated just over USD 5 billion in revenue. In football, Euro 2024 in Germany only recorded USD 2,9 billion in revenue.
