Tax agency identifies signs of 'impersonating officials'

Individuals posing as tax officials and requesting personal identification, bank passwords, or money transfers are indicators of fraudulent activity, according to the Hanoi Tax Department.

The Hanoi Tax Department recently warned about individuals impersonating tax agencies and officials. These fraudsters contact citizens, businesses, and household enterprises via phone calls, letters, or work invitations to exploit them.

According to the department, a key indicator of impersonation is when someone claiming to be a tax official asks for confidential information. This includes personal identification numbers, citizen identification cards, passwords, or one-time password (OTP) verification codes.

The tax agency affirms it never requests taxpayers to provide such confidential information. Furthermore, it does not ask for money transfers to personal accounts to resolve tax administrative procedures.

The tax sector also warns against fraudulent schemes involving links to fake websites. The official tax agency website currently uses the domain "gdt.gov.vn". According to the Hanoi Tax Department, official information is sent via the eTax Mobile application, public service portal, e-tax system, or official government emails ending with @gdt.gov.vn. If sent by postal mail, the envelope containing tax documents will feature the sending unit's logo and identification.

Conversely, fake websites often have addresses similar to the official one, but include minor alterations like added or removed characters, or unusual numbers. Some of these sites use domains such as .com, .net, or .org, subsequently prompting users to enter personal information and bank account details.

Therefore, the Hanoi Tax Department advises citizens not to immediately follow instructions if they receive suspicious calls, messages, or invitations. Instead, taxpayers should log in to official information portals, call hotlines, or visit their local tax branches directly to verify the information and report any signs of fraud to the authorities.
