This announcement came amidst Washington's heated dispute with Madrid over defense spending and Spain's lack of support for the US in its conflict with Iran, AFP reported.
"We no longer want to engage in trade with Spain," Trump stated during the NATO summit in Ankara, Turkey. He also referred to Madrid as a "terrible partner" within NATO.

In March, the US President also threatened trade sanctions against Spain after the country refused to allow US military forces to use its bases for an attack on Iran. "We will cut off trade relations with Spain. We don't want anything to do with them anymore," Trump said at the time.
Spain is the world's largest exporter of olive oil. It also sells automotive parts, steel, and chemicals to the US. Compared to many other European nations, Spain is less vulnerable to Trump's threats of economic sanctions.
Last year, the US recorded its 4th consecutive year of trade surplus with Spain, reaching 4,8 billion USD. According to data from the US Census Bureau, the country's exports to the European nation totaled 26,1 billion USD, while imports were 21,3 billion USD. Exports of crude oil and liquefied natural gas to Spain have also accelerated over the past few years.
