40 universities to use SPT exam scores for 2027 admissions

National Economics University, Hanoi Medical University, and a series of other institutions will use Hanoi National University of Education's SPT competency assessment exam scores for 2027 admissions.

Hanoi National University of Education (HNUE) announced on 16/9 that 40 universities, including leading institutions like National Economics University and Hanoi Medical University, will utilize its SPT competency assessment exam scores for admissions in 2027. This group includes Hanoi National University of Education, National Economics University, Hanoi Medical University, Hanoi University of Civil Engineering, Phenikaa University, and Posts and Telecommunications Institute of Technology. This marks the first time National Economics University will adopt these scores.

"The increasing number of higher education institutions using SPT results expands admission opportunities and provides more choices for prospective students", HNUE stated.

List of 40 universities considering SPT exam scores

For 2027, the SPT exam will encompass 12 subjects: Mathematics, Literature, English, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, History, Geography, Informatics, Economic and Legal Education, Industrial Technology, and Agricultural Technology.

The content will align closely with the current general education curriculum, focusing on evaluating core knowledge comprehension, application, and specific subject competencies.

However, HNUE plans significant adjustments to the exam's format and organizational process.

Specifically, the university is transitioning from paper-based testing to computer-based multiple-choice exams. Each candidate will be permitted to register for only one test session.

"This new format is expected to standardize the organizational process, minimize manual operations in collecting and processing multiple-choice answers, and enhance exam data management capabilities", the university reported.

Regarding the SPT exam structure, Literature and Mathematics will continue to feature a combination of multiple-choice and essay questions. While the essay section will be displayed on the computer screen alongside the multiple-choice questions, candidates will write their responses on paper. The exams for the remaining 10 subjects will consist solely of multiple-choice questions.

The university explained that retaining the essay component for Literature and Mathematics is crucial for assessing skills like reasoning, presentation, expression, and problem-solving, which are challenging to measure comprehensively through multiple-choice questions alone.

The 2027 exam schedule for each session will be condensed to a single day, a reduction from the previous two-day format, to alleviate candidates' travel and accommodation burdens. HNUE has yet to announce specific dates, locations, or registration timelines for the 2027 SPT exam.

2027 will be the fifth year the SPT exam is held. Last year, nearly 23.000 candidates participated, marking the highest attendance to date. According to the university's conversion, a score of 25,75 SPT points in the A00 combination (Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry) is equivalent to 29,5 points in the high school graduation exam for the same combination.
