The "Warm Meal Card" project, launched by Nanjing University of Science and Technology's Education Development Fund in 2016, has provided support to over 41,000 students over 10 years, totaling approximately 7,9 million yuan (more than 1,1 million USD).

By analyzing student card swipe data on campus, the university identifies those who spend minimally and require assistance. This data-driven approach replaced a previous system where students had to submit applications detailing their circumstances, and approved lists were publicly disclosed. Fund officials recognized that the old method often caused distress to struggling students. Many preferred to live frugally, opting for the cheapest meals, rather than be labeled "poor" to receive financial aid.

Wang Bo, Secretary General of the Fund, stated, "Observing many students consistently ordering only simple vegetarian dishes, we sought a more accurate and compassionate funding approach. The support must reach truly needy students while preserving their self-esteem and privacy."

Initially, the fund allocated 1 million yuan to support 301 students. The criteria for identification were students consuming 60 meals per month, averaging less than 7 yuan per meal. The university covered the difference, ensuring each student received 630 yuan per month, equivalent to three meals daily. This support continued until their graduation.

The current support level has increased to 750 yuan, with statistical analysis now extended to include campus bookstores and beverage stalls.

Many lecturers, alumni, and philanthropists actively support the project, contributing nearly 10,000 donations totaling over 9,78 million yuan.

A fund official noted, "Many students who received support have returned to make regular contributions after graduation, likening it to receiving a baton and passing it on to help others."
