Teachers whose students win international awards to receive up to 500 million dong

Over 10 provinces and cities have announced rewards for teachers who directly mentor students achieving international awards, with Quang Ninh offering the highest at 350-525 million dong for a gold medal.

These reward policies were recently approved by the People's Councils of various provinces and cities, typically ranging from 50% to 80% of the student's award amount.

For international awards, Quang Ninh leads by allocating up to 525 million dong if a teacher (or group of teachers) mentors a student from an ethnic minority or a student studying in a disadvantaged area who wins an international Olympic gold medal. Subsequent reward levels are 375 million dong for a silver medal, 300 million dong for a bronze medal, and 150 million dong for a certificate of merit (fourth prize, honorable mention).

If the award-winning student does not fall into these categories, the leading teacher receives a lower reward, 1,5 times less, ranging from 100 million to 350 million dong.

Hai Phong and Vinh Long each allocate 300 million dong for teachers whose students achieve international gold medals, with Vinh Long applying a reward equal to that of the student. Other localities, including Phu Tho, Ninh Binh, Da Nang, Ha Noi, and Hue, offer rewards exceeding 200 million dong.

When a student achieves multiple awards, the teacher's reward is cumulative or calculated based on a coefficient, varying by locality.

For instance, Phu Tho stipulates that a teacher's reward equals 80% of the student's total prize money. In Tuyen Quang, this amount is 70% of the student's prize, but if multiple awards are won, it is 100% of the highest award. Ha Tinh, meanwhile, adds an extra 5 million to 13,5 million dong for teachers for each subsequent award, depending on the achievement.

Reward levels for teachers whose students achieve international awards across 13 provinces and cities, as of 13/9 (unit: million dong):

No. Province/City First (Gold) Second (Silver) Third (Bronze) Fourth/Honorable Mention (Certificate of Merit)
1 Quang Ninh 350-525 250-375 200-300 100-150

According to the Ministry of Education and Training, during the 2016-2025 period, Vietnamese students earned 112 gold medals, 140 silver medals, 89 bronze medals, and 21 certificates of merit in regional and international Olympic competitions.

Most national teams consistently ranked among the top 10 leading countries, with the Chemistry Olympic team maintaining a position in the top 5 since 2020.
