On 9/3, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Culture and Sports announced that the study to relocate the Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology’s main campus aligns with a policy to move higher education, vocational, and medical facilities out of inner-city areas. This policy was approved by the Standing Committee of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee in late February. This announcement followed a few days after a real estate enterprise generated public discussion by proposing to relocate and redevelop the over 14-hectare land plot currently occupied by the Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology, part of Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City, in Dien Hong ward.
However, the city has not made a specific decision regarding the land use plan for the University of Technology’s main campus. Furthermore, it has not approved assigning the site to any enterprise for commercial real estate development.
This initiative aims to gradually alleviate traffic congestion and population density in central areas, reorganize urban space for rational and sustainable development, and foster large-scale, modern university urban zones.
The Department of Culture and Sports clarified that the adjustment and rearrangement of large-scale higher education institutions, particularly those within the national university system, fall under the Government’s authority.
Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City has also long intended to gradually consolidate its facilities within the national university urban area, often referred to as the "university village," in Dong Hoa ward. The goal is to establish a large-scale, modern center for training and scientific research. Previously, implementation faced challenges due to insufficient land and infrastructure. However, the university village has now allocated nearly 40 hectares for the University of Technology, with significant infrastructure investment in place.
