Over 110 universities across Vietnam offer English language programs, typically using entrance exam combinations like D01 (Math, Literature, English), D07 (Math, Chemistry, English), and A01 (Math, Physics, English).
Some universities, like the University of Languages and International Studies, also offer combinations like D15 (Literature, Geography, English), D14 (Literature, History, English), and D08 (Math, Biology, English). The Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam adds D09 (Math, History, English) and D10 (Math, English, Geography).
Nguyen Thuy Duong, deputy head of the English department at Hanoi University, observes a growing demand for English language instruction in Vietnam, particularly in centers, international schools, public schools, and universities. The Ministry of Education and Training's project, "Step by step making English a second language in schools," aiming to promote widespread English use, further contributes to this trend.
What does an English language degree entail?
Bachelor's programs in English typically span 4 years, encompassing 122-150 credits. General education courses (politics, society, law, etc.) are mandatory. Core courses cover language components, including vocabulary, phonetics, and structure, along with specialized knowledge. Each university tailors its curriculum based on its focus and strengths.
Hanoi University's program emphasizes practical application, providing in-depth knowledge of English linguistics (phonetics, grammar, vocabulary, pragmatics, comparative linguistics), literature, and English-speaking cultures (nature, history, politics, society, economics, education, environment, and culture). The program offers two specializations: translation-interpretation and teaching methodology.
Similarly, the University of Languages and International Studies offers specializations in translation-interpretation, management, business and commerce, international studies, and linguistics.
At the Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam, students study pragmatics, discourse analysis, English and American literature, and English and American studies. Alongside specialized knowledge, students choose one of three tracks: translation-interpretation for diplomacy, journalism and communication, or economics and business.
Universities also emphasize soft skills to enhance students' competitiveness. Hanoi University, for instance, provides specialized training in teaching methods, translation-interpretation, and practical experience through internships, events, and projects.
The Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam cultivates language skills (English and another foreign language), professional skills (academic writing, public relations, event organization, etc.), communication, negotiation, report writing, academic writing, critical thinking, and conference moderation.
Many universities offer elective courses (around 15 credits), allowing students to explore English for economics, finance, tourism, culture, and culinary arts.
