Hanoi welcomes 43 new schools

43 new schools, mostly preschools and primary schools, are set to open for the new academic year, with only three high schools among them.

The Hanoi Department of Education and Training announced on 14/8 that of the 43 new schools, 16 are private and 27 are public.

By school level, there are 17 preschools, followed by 13 primary schools, 10 junior high schools, and three high schools.

The former Hoang Mai district has the highest number of new schools with 10. This area has been a hotspot for public school shortages, with parents previously having to enter lotteries to secure preschool spots for their children. Bac Tu Liem district has seven new schools, Ha Dong has five, Cau Giay has four, and Nam Tu Liem has two.

The list of new schools is as follows (some are yet to be officially named):

For the 2025-2026 school year, Hanoi has over 2.3 million preschool and K-12 students, an increase of approximately 60,000 from last year. The total number of schools, including the 43 new additions, is 2,954. Hanoi's student population, formerly the largest in the country, is now second to Ho Chi Minh City with 2.5 million students.

For many years, the capital has faced a shortage of public schools, primarily due to rapid population growth. City officials have stated that Hanoi's student population grows by 50,000-60,000 annually, requiring 30-40 new schools each year.

The city has repeatedly requested special mechanisms from government ministries for school construction. In 10/2024, the government allowed Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City to use floor area instead of land area for school construction to address limitations in densely populated urban areas.
