HCMUE's specialized aptitude test was first held in 2022 with approximately 2,000 candidates. Six other universities used the results for admissions: Hanoi National University of Education, Hanoi University of Education 2, University of Education (Hue University), University of Education (Da Nang University), Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry and Trade, and Nguyen Tat Thanh University.
The 2025 test was restructured to align with the new national high school curriculum. Content from 12th grade comprised 70-80%, with the remainder from 10th and 11th grades. The English test assessed proficiency from levels three to five based on the six-level national foreign language framework. The 90-minute tests were computer-based.
HCMUE combines aptitude test scores with high school transcripts for admissions. In a subject combination, the main subject's aptitude test score is multiplied by two and added to the scores of the other two subjects (averaged over three years of high school).
The 2025 admission score calculation formula for HCMUE is as follows:
Admission Score = (0.5 x Main Subject Score + 0.25 x Subject 1 Score + 0.25 x Subject 2 Score) x 3 + Bonus Points
For physical education, preschool education, and national defense-security education, applicants' math or literature aptitude test scores are combined with their talent assessment scores, using the following formula:
Admission Score = Aptitude Test Score + Talent Subject 1 Score + Talent Subject 2 Score + Bonus Points
Last year, the combined aptitude test and transcript-based admission scores ranged from 19.51 to 28.25, with the highest for chemistry education.
