This proposal is part of the 2025-2026 academic year plan submitted by the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training to the People's Committee. The remaining grades will start on 25/8, with the opening ceremony held on the morning of 5/9 as usual.
The Ministry of Education and Training's framework, released yesterday, sets the earliest start date for grades 1, 9, and 12 as 22/8. Other grades can start a week earlier, on 29/8.
The first semester will end before 18/1/2026, and the second semester before 31/5. The 2026 high school graduation exam is scheduled for 11-12/6, about two weeks earlier than in recent years.
However, provinces and cities can create their own academic year plans, as long as they ensure 35 weeks of instruction (18 weeks in the first semester and 17 in the second), with holidays and Tet breaks as regulated.
After the merger, Ho Chi Minh City has the largest education system in the country, with over 2.5 million students.
