The Ministry of Health issued the decision to appoint the Rector of Hanoi Medical University on 6/7. Nguyen Huu Tu, 58, from Thanh Hoa, will serve in this capacity until his retirement.

Tu is an alumnus of Hanoi Medical University (HMU). He completed his residency at HMU and Viet Duc Hospital, specializing in anesthesiology and resuscitation, and earned his doctorate in medicine from the university. He spent many years studying in France, completing an advanced specialist degree (AFSA), conducting research at the National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS), and serving as an assistant lecturer at Paris XIII University (Chef de clinique).
Professor Tu has taught at Hanoi Medical University for over 30 years, including 12 years as vice rector for training before becoming rector five years ago.
His contributions to HMU include establishing and developing the Hanoi Medical University branch in Thanh Hoa, the Center for Testing and Quality Assurance, and the Center for Anesthesiology, Resuscitation, and Pain Management at Hanoi Medical University Hospital. He also introduced new medical programs, such as an advanced bachelor of nursing program.
Tu was recognized as an associate professor in 2007 and a professor in 2014, becoming the youngest in the medical sector to achieve these academic ranks at both times.
He is credited with initiating the development and transfer of pain management models for emergency and post-surgical care to many hospitals, as well as training and advancing pain management techniques in Vietnam. He is also one of two Vietnamese individuals invited to contribute to the French Encyclopedia of Pathologies (EMC-Cardiologie, Angeiologie, ElSEVIER SAS, 2005).
Professor Tu received the Asia Pacific Research Award in 2009 and the Ordre des Palmes Academiques (academic palm award) from the French Government in 2023.
Hanoi Medical University has a history of over 120 years, standing as a leading institution for health science education and research nationwide. At the undergraduate level, the university enrolls approximately 1,700-2,000 students annually.
Currently, Times Higher Education (THE) ranks the university among the 801-1,000 best universities worldwide and in the top 501-600 in the health sciences field. It is the only Vietnamese medical and pharmaceutical university to be ranked.
