Throughout his career, Tan Diem consistently created distinctive character portrayals, delivering what was described as "exemplary acting". Beyond film and television, he was also a stage actor.

According to Jimu News, Tan Diem's expressions were subtle, with his inner thoughts sometimes conveyed through a mere sigh. He demonstrated versatility across various character types, from high-ranking officials to eunuchs and even Jianghu (martial arts world) leaders.

Tan Diem's career embodied the adage: "There are no small parts, only small actors." He rarely played lead roles, yet left a lasting impression through his supporting characters with a natural acting style. Time Video remarked, "As long as he was there, audiences could hardly miss his presence."
