The actor married actress Leung Kit Wah in 1988, and they had a daughter, Huang Chi Ching. In 2020, Leung Kit Wah passed away from leukemia, leading to a period of depression for Huang Yat Wah due to the loss of his life partner. With the support of his daughter and friends, the actor gradually adjusted to life without Leung Kit Wah by his side.
Huang Yat Wah once penned a letter to his late wife, which included the following passage: "My wife, I cannot forget the day we first met: so lively, so lovely. I cannot forget you when we dated: always smiling, playfully affectionate. I cannot forget you when you gave birth to our daughter: devoted, tolerant, caring for our family. I cannot forget you when you fell ill: bewildered, afraid. I cannot forget you when you passed away: peaceful, with a gentle smile as you closed your eyes... It is a pity we could not grow old together. Marrying you was my greatest success and my proudest achievement in life. Please do not worry about me, this lonely old man. I will carry on your strong spirit to live the rest of my life. I hope we will meet again in the vast universe. Forever loving you".
