Indian director making film about 'Ramayana' epic

Director Nitesh Tiwari is making a film inspired by the "Ramayana" epic with an estimated 500 million USD budget.

According to IndieWire, the film will be released in two parts. The first part is expected in November, coinciding with India's Diwali festival, with the second part following next year. "Ramayana" is filmed in IMAX, offering a superior visual and audio experience compared to standard screenings. Sony will distribute the film in all markets outside India.

The Times of India reports that the substantial investment translates into high salaries for the cast. Ranbir Kapoor, portraying Rama, is reportedly receiving around 150 crore rupees (over 15,7 million USD) for both parts, which is double his previous project fees. Yash, who plays the antagonist Ravana, is also among the top earners, receiving approximately 100 crore rupees and additional profits as a co-producer.

"Ramayana" recounts the story of Prince Rama, an incarnation of the god Vishnu, as he battles to rescue his wife, Sita, from the demon king Ravana. This confrontation occurs after Sita's abduction.

Originating nearly 2,500 years ago, "Ramayana" has profoundly influenced the culture and art of India and its neighboring countries. Valmiki, credited with documenting and preserving this epic, once stated: "As long as rivers flow and mountains stand, the epic Ramayana will captivate hearts and free them from the cycle of sin."

Nitesh Tiwari, 53, is a prominent Indian film director and screenwriter, known for his emotional and popular works such as "Dangal" and "Chhichhore". His career is characterized by his ability to balance entertainment with social messages, leading his films to both commercial success and critical acclaim. The Times of India described him as a "versatile and visionary" director.
