Meditative singer Ani Choying Drolma returns to Vietnam

Nepalese singer Ani Choying Drolma is set to perform two concerts in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City this September.

She is scheduled to perform at the Sound Healing Concert 2026, taking place on 12/9 in Ho Chi Minh City and on 19/9 at Ho Guom Theater, Hanoi. The artist will present various healing-focused works under the theme "Nhan - The Inner Seed". Ani Choying Drolma believes each individual possesses positive qualities like compassion, wisdom, and inner strength. Nurturing these inner seeds enables them to overcome adversity and adapt to the world.

This marks Ani Choying Drolma's second performance in Vietnam. In 2025, she participated in the "Journey Into Silence" program series, sharing meditative chants connected to her monastic life.

Ani Choying Drolma believes a music night focused on inner life can initiate one's journey to find balance. According to her, instead of avoiding life's noises, people can recognize them as an essential part. "Even noise has a purpose. It helps you understand the value of stillness, peace, and connecting with yourself", she said.

Ani Choying Drolma was born in 1971 in Kathmandu, Nepal. She entered monastic life at age 13 and trained at Nagi Gompa, a Buddhist nunnery in the Kathmandu Valley. Her singing gained widespread recognition after collaborating with American guitarist Steve Tibbetts. To date, she has released 16 albums and undertaken numerous international tours.

She discovered music during her monastic training, where she was prepared to become an Umze, a chant leader in Buddhist ceremonies. A nun releasing albums, performing on stage, and touring internationally initially drew criticism. However, Ani Choying Drolma states that the Buddhist tradition that shaped her emphasizes the spirit of transcending rigid views, not being bound by preconceptions.

"I am a nun, but when I stand on stage, I also have the role of an artist. To soothe listeners, the practitioner must first maintain clarity and focus", she said.

Besides music, she is involved in social initiatives, focusing on education and women's empowerment. She founded Arya Tara School, a school for nuns, and undertakes various community projects in Nepal.

The concert will showcase sound healing works (sound therapy), which uses vibrations and sound frequencies to help the body and mind achieve a state of relaxation. This technique has a long history in Indian, Egyptian, and Tibetan cultures. Doctor Doan Thu Hong, from the Vietnam Institute of Applied Medicine, notes that this method can promote relaxation, better sleep, and concentration.
