Stephen Chow's "Ru Hua" recovers after stroke

Hong Kong actor Lee Kin-yan, famous for his role as Ru Hua in Stephen Chow's films, is walking again after being paralyzed by a stroke.

Director Lee Lik-chi posted a video on his social media page on 2/8, inviting Lee Kin-yan for a meal and tea. The actor has lost considerable weight since his illness but appears cheerful. Lee Lik-chi said Lee Kin-yan is recovering well and hopes to return to acting. He can walk but his speech remains unclear, limited to simple, short sentences.

Lee Kin-yan was a prominent figure in the entertainment industry, with numerous advertising contracts and event appearances. He suffered a severe stroke in 2019, undergoing life-saving brain surgery. He survived but suffered damage to the left side of his brain, resulting in paralysis on the right side of his body.

His wife and children have been caring for him. According to St Headline, his wife said that after the surgery, he couldn't control basic functions like eating, walking, or using the restroom. His language skills were also affected, making communication difficult. The actor experienced periods of depression and distress due to his reliance on a wheelchair. After nearly two years of treatment, his condition and spirits have improved.

In 2022, he briefly returned to the screen with a cameo role in a film directed by Cheng Man-hoi. He has since remained out of the public eye.

The 64-year-old Lee Kin-yan is known for playing flamboyant, often heavily made-up, comedic roles in Stephen Chow's films, his character often referred to as Ru Hua. He is remembered for his roles in films like "King of Beggars", "Flirting Scholar", "Justice, My Foot!", "From Beijing with Love", "God of Cookery", "The Tricky Master", and "Shaolin Soccer". He also worked as a producer at Star Overseas, a film company founded by Stephen Chow.
