Dat's pre-operative assessments, including ultrasound and corneal topography, confirmed the structural integrity and strength of his corneas. The tests revealed sufficient corneal thickness and no abnormalities in the cornea, retina, optic nerve, or vitreous humor. Dr. Dinh Trung Nghia, Deputy Director of the High-Tech Eye Center at Tam Anh General Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City, determined Dat was a suitable candidate for Femtosecond Lasik.
This minimally invasive procedure offers a quick recovery time. Two laser systems are used in two main phases. First, a high-speed femtosecond laser creates a corneal flap, precisely separating corneal tissue without causing pain. Second, an excimer laser reshapes the underlying corneal tissue to correct the refractive error. The corneal flap is then repositioned. The same procedure is repeated on the other eye. The 10-minute procedure is performed while the patient is awake, involves no bleeding, and allows the corneal flap to heal naturally. Within a week, clear vision is typically restored, often achieving 20/20 visual acuity.

At his one-week follow-up appointment, Dat reported clear vision with 20/20 acuity, along with relief from headaches, eye strain, and blurry vision.
Myopia is a common refractive error. Various treatment options exist, including non-invasive methods like eyeglasses and contact lenses. Eyeglasses are safe, versatile, and suitable for all ages, with bifocal or multifocal options available to address multiple vision issues simultaneously. Contact lenses are ideal for active individuals or those seeking a cosmetic solution but require proper hygiene to prevent infections. Orthokeratology (Ortho-K) lenses, worn overnight, temporarily reshape the cornea, allowing for clear vision during the day without glasses.

Individuals over 18 with stable myopia and no other eye conditions may be eligible for refractive surgery. Two main categories of refractive surgery exist: laser-based and non-laser-based procedures.
According to Dr. Nghia, most methods are safe and effective, but no single method suits everyone. Each method has its own advantages and disadvantages. Doctors must carefully consider factors like corneal thickness, degree of myopia, astigmatism, farsightedness, dry eye condition, and occupation to recommend the optimal approach. Currently, surgery is the only method that can completely eliminate myopia. However, recurrence is possible if pre-surgical myopia is unstable, the patient has high myopia, or due to individual factors.
Dr. Nghia advises patients to avoid rubbing their eyes, wear sunglasses outdoors, avoid spicy and hot foods, and adhere to follow-up appointments. Swimming, eye makeup, and contact sports should be limited during the first month. In the subsequent 3-6 months, proper eye rest is essential for optimal results.
