Chemotherapy uses chemical drugs introduced into the body to destroy and prevent cancer cell growth, while also limiting metastasis. These drugs can affect both malignant and healthy cells, leading to many side effects such as fatigue, weakness, nausea, hair loss, loss of taste, anemia, and bleeding.
Doctor Kim Thi Be Diep, from the Department of Oncology, Ho Chi Minh City Oncology Center, recommends some foods patients should prioritize before chemotherapy to improve their physical condition, reduce infection risk, and limit side effects.

Yogurt provides many probiotics, which help maintain a healthy gut microbiome, preventing diarrhea, constipation, and digestive disorders when chemicals enter the body. This food also contains high levels of protein and calcium, supporting nutrient absorption and bone protection.
Fresh fruit is rich in vitamins, minerals, and fiber, creating a "cushion" for the digestive system, improving constipation, and strengthening the immune system. Natural fructose in fruit provides energy for the brain and muscles without causing bloating or indigestion like starches or fats. The refreshing taste of fruit helps reduce metallic or bitter tastes. Some berries, such as strawberries, blueberries, and grapes, are rich in antioxidants and vitamin C, which have anti-inflammatory effects and boost patient immunity.
Cheese is a food high in energy, calcium, and easily absorbed protein. Eating cheese before chemotherapy helps patients maintain weight and store energy reserves. During and after chemotherapy, the body needs a lot of protein to repair damaged tissues.
Boiled eggs are rich in protein, vitamin B12, and albumin (a plasma protein produced by the liver). The protein in eggs is easily absorbed, increasing the body's necessary protein intake without overloading the digestive system. Egg whites contain high levels of albumin, which helps reduce swelling and fatigue.
Doctor Diep notes that before, during, and after chemotherapy, patients should eat adequately instead of dieting, drink enough water, and exercise regularly to contribute to strengthening their health.
