5 tips for gargling with salt water

Adjusting the salinity of the salt solution, avoiding swallowing it, and combining it with brushing and flossing can help eliminate bacteria, alleviate sore throats, and clear nasal congestion.

Gargling with warm salt water can ease soreness, swelling, and irritation in the throat. It also helps thin mucus, remove bacteria and viruses, and keep mucous membranes moist. This method is often recommended for individuals with respiratory infections like pharyngitis, bronchitis, rhinosinusitis, or Covid-19, as it can reduce discomfort when swallowing and clear airways. A regular habit of gargling and using saline nasal drops can also limit infections, soothe minor sores, and promote healing. Here are some tips for effectively using salt water.

Adjust salinity

A salt solution that is too strong can irritate the mouth and throat, potentially worsening existing sores. It is advisable to use a pre-mixed saline solution or prepare your own by dissolving half a teaspoon of salt in 240 milliliters of warm water to minimize irritation and ensure comfort.

Do not swallow

Salt water is intended only for gargling and should be spat out completely afterward. Swallowing salt water increases sodium intake, which can lead to dehydration. Over time, this practice may contribute to high blood pressure, dry mouth, and bad breath.

Complement medical treatment

Gargling with salt water helps alleviate symptoms of sore throat and nasal congestion. Individuals with pharyngitis should combine salt water gargling, twice daily, with treatment as advised by their doctor. While salt water can improve oral health, reduce mouth sores, and prevent bad breath, it does not replace brushing and flossing. For a clean, healthy mouth and fresh breath, gargle twice daily and brush your teeth regularly in the morning and evening.

Gargle before brushing

Gargling before brushing can remove residual plaque and bacteria, enhancing the effectiveness of enamel protection. For individuals with a sore throat or pharyngitis, gargling after brushing allows the salt solution to remain in contact with the throat longer, thus improving its ability to manage irritation.

Avoid overuse

Gargling with salt water more than three times a day can irritate the gums and soften tooth enamel. Everyone should consult a doctor about their specific health condition to receive advice on appropriate frequency.

How to gargle: Add one teaspoon of salt to 240 milliliters of warm water and stir until completely dissolved. Gargle for 15-30 seconds, cleaning your mouth, teeth, and gums, then spit it out. Perform this process a maximum of three times daily.
