6 drinks diabetics should consume and avoid

Black coffee, green vegetable juice, and unsweetened tea are more suitable choices for people with diabetes compared to fruit juice and energy drinks.

Should consume

Black coffee is a suitable option for people with diabetes when consumed plain, without milk, cream, or artificial sweeteners, due to its low calorie content.

According to Eating Well, caffeine can influence the body's insulin response. Chlorogenic acid, a potent antioxidant, helps slow sugar absorption in the intestines, potentially preventing blood sugar spikes after meals.

Green vegetable juice typically has less impact on blood sugar levels than fruit juice, as green vegetables contain fiber and have a low glycemic index. Additionally, certain vegetables are rich in nutrients, vitamins, and antioxidants that help reduce inflammation and boost energy.

People with diabetes should choose vegetables like celery and kale, making their own juice without added sugar to avoid affecting blood sugar.

Infused water, flavored with ingredients like lemon, passion fruit, apple, pear slices, cucumber, or herbs such as mint, can alleviate boredom while ensuring adequate hydration.

Gently crushing a few mint, basil, or rosemary leaves and adding them to a water bottle creates a refreshing aroma without concern for blood sugar spikes. According to Very Well Health, adding fruit slices to water also provides vitamin C and boosts immunity.

Iced tea, prepared by steeping green tea or oolong tea in hot water and then adding ice, is a refreshing beverage. Tea is rich in antioxidants like EGCG, low in calories, and helps manage blood sugar by slowing glucose absorption and improving insulin sensitivity. Avoid adding sugar or sweeteners, as these can raise blood sugar levels.

Should avoid

Energy drinks are typically high in sugar and calories. According to WebMD, people with diabetes should limit or avoid them entirely, as they can cause rapid increases in blood sugar. Regular consumption also raises the risk of weight gain and promotes chronic inflammation, negatively impacting blood sugar control.

While fruit juice can be helpful during hypoglycemia, people with diabetes should limit its consumption. Most fruit juices lack fiber and contain high sugar content, which can easily elevate blood sugar. Juices made from high-glycemic fruits like pineapple, orange, watermelon, and mango should be avoided. Diabetics should opt for whole, fresh fruit for better blood sugar management.
