A 140 kg pregnant woman with pre-eclampsia and dangerously high blood pressure successfully delivered a 4,6 kg baby boy via cesarean section at Hanoi Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital on 9/5, following a high-risk pregnancy. Doctor Le Duy Toan, Head of Voluntary Obstetrics Department D4, emphasized the critical nature of the case, stating, "This is a dangerous obstetric condition that can directly affect the safety of both mother and fetus if not managed promptly."
The patient's significant weight, thick fat layer, and complex medical history presented numerous challenges for the medical team. Administering spinal anesthesia for the cesarean section was complicated. Surgeons also navigated risks such as bleeding, blood clots, and postoperative complications common in obese individuals.
Despite the complexities, the surgery proceeded smoothly. The newborn, weighing 4,6 kg, is under close observation to address any potential risks associated with large infants. Both mother and baby are currently stable.

Doctors highlight the increased risks associated with obesity during pregnancy. These include gestational hypertension, pre-eclampsia, gestational diabetes, venous thrombosis, postoperative infection, macrosomia, difficult labor, or postpartum hemorrhage. The risk of obstetric complications escalates further in cases with a history of cesarean section and an excessively large fetus.
Maternal obesity also directly impacts fetal health. Babies born to obese mothers face a higher likelihood of congenital heart defects or neural tube defects, often linked to maternal metabolic diseases during pregnancy. There is also an increased risk of preterm birth and stillbirth, with this risk correlating directly with the mother's body mass index. Furthermore, large babies are more susceptible to birth injuries during a cesarean section.
To mitigate these risks, women should manage their weight before pregnancy and ensure they receive comprehensive, regular prenatal check-ups. Close monitoring at specialized medical facilities enables early detection and timely management of potential risk factors, thereby enhancing the safety of both mother and fetus throughout the pregnancy.
