Associate Professor Tran Cao Binh, Director of the National Hospital of Odonto-Stomatology, emphasized a crucial guideline known as the "four 2s" rule at the launch of World Oral Health Day 2026 on 14/3. This principle advises individuals to brush their teeth at least two times daily for a minimum of two minutes each session, avoid eating for two hours after brushing, and undergo dental check-ups at least two times a year.
Oral health is an inseparable part of human health. Globally, approximately 3,5 billion people are living with oral diseases, according to the World Health Organization.
In Vietnam, over 90% of the population has experienced various oral health conditions, yet only about 7% undergo regular dental check-ups. Statistics reveal that over 85% of children suffer from tooth decay, and more than 80% of adults experience gingivitis and periodontitis. These conditions are major causes of early tooth loss, impacting overall health.
Associate Professor Binh highlighted that oral diseases are not merely individual concerns but a public health challenge requiring significant attention. Most oral health issues are preventable; individuals need accurate knowledge and must maintain scientific oral care habits. Adhering to the "four 2s" principle is essential for proper toothbrushing and ensuring good oral health.

At the launch ceremony, Deputy Minister of Health Tran Van Thuan noted that the specialized system of the odonto-stomatology sector has been standardized with 360 technical procedures. Medical professionals have also mastered numerous high-tech techniques in maxillofacial surgery and orthodontics, contributing to improved treatment quality. From a strategic perspective, oral health care is not just a specialized field within odonto-stomatology; it is a crucial component of preventive medicine and the universal healthcare system.
"A modern healthcare system not only treats diseases effectively but also helps people prevent illness early, proactively, starting from the smallest daily habits. Oral care is one such important habit," Deputy Minister Thuan stated.
Specifically, management agencies are investing in community oral health programs. Schools are educating students on oral care habits from a young age. Most importantly, each individual must proactively care for their own and their family's oral health.
World Oral Health Day aims to transform awareness and behavior within the community, encouraging attention to oral care for children, individuals, family members, and the broader community. This year, the Vietnam Odonto-Stomatology Association continues to launch a month of free oral health examinations, consultations, and care for the community. To date, over 50 public and private odonto-stomatology facilities have registered to participate, committing to examine over 47,000 children and adults nationwide.
