Does infrequent sex lead to declining male physiology?

Due to a busy work schedule and frequent business trips, my wife and I are intimate only about once a month. Will this prolonged situation cause a decline in male physiology? (Hoang Nam, Hanoi)

Infrequent sexual activity is not a direct cause of declining male physiology. Erectile function relies on the coordinated interplay of vascular, nervous, hormonal, and psychological systems. Medical conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, obesity, and cardiovascular disease, along with smoking, a sedentary lifestyle, and certain psychological factors, are the primary causes and significant risk factors for erectile dysfunction.

Many men believe that physiological function can decline after a long period without sexual activity. However, erections can occur naturally, especially during sleep. Therefore, a man not engaging in sexual activity for several weeks or months does not necessarily mean his physiological function will weaken.

However, some individuals might experience difficulty achieving an erection or a reduced libido after a prolonged period of inactivity. This situation can be linked to psychological factors, such as stress, anxiety, fatigue, or performance pressure.

Nevertheless, if men have an infrequent sex life while also experiencing chronic sleep deprivation, a sedentary lifestyle, weight gain, smoking, or excessive alcohol consumption, the risk of physiological decline increases. Specifically, diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia, and cardiovascular diseases can affect the vascular system supplying blood to the penis, leading to erectile dysfunction.

You do not need to force an increase in sexual frequency, as there is no fixed frequency suitable for everyone. What is important is a sex life that aligns with individual needs, health, and comfort. You should maintain regular physical activity, manage your weight, get sufficient sleep, limit tobacco and alcohol, and effectively control any chronic conditions. These actions will contribute to improving overall health and sexual function.

Men should seek medical consultation when changes in physiological function become frequent, prolonged, or impact daily life. Individuals with underlying conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, or obesity should be particularly attentive, as some changes in physiological function can be linked to overall health. When abnormalities occur, men should identify the underlying cause rather than self-medicating with products claiming to enhance physiology.
