Does scalp massage help hair growth?

My hair has been falling out quite a lot recently, and many people suggest that regular scalp massage can stimulate hair regrowth. Is this true? (My Thuy, 35 years old)

Scalp massage offers benefits for hair health, including improved circulation and stress reduction, which can indirectly support hair growth. However, it is not a standalone solution for significant hair loss or a method to generate new hair follicles, according to Doctor Hoang Quyet Tien from the Medical Information Center at Tam Anh General Hospital Ho Chi Minh City.

Research indicates that scalp massage warms the scalp and stimulates the dilation of blood vessels. This process enhances blood flow to the brain and creates favorable conditions for existing, active hair follicles to develop more healthily. Additionally, this technique promotes relaxation, invigorates the spirit, and reduces stress, a common contributor to hair loss.

Despite these benefits, scalp massage cannot create new hair follicles or regrow hair in areas where follicles have atrophied or lost function. Hair forms from hair germ cells located within follicles beneath the scalp. Under the control of the neuro-endocrine system, these cells continuously move and differentiate to produce new hair strands. They also determine the rate of hair growth, its thickness, and its strength. When hair germ cells function well, hair grows thicker, stronger, and shinier. Conversely, if hair germ cells weaken or follicles sustain prolonged damage, hair becomes sparse, weak, and sheds more frequently.

Therefore, hair development depends not only on scalp blood circulation but also on hair germ cells and numerous other factors. These include genetics, age, hormones, nutrition, sleep quality, and overall health. Relying solely on scalp massage will not address these broader influences on hair vitality.

To effectively improve hair loss, you need to combine several strategies. These include maintaining a balanced diet, getting sufficient sleep, managing stress, and practicing proper hair care. If you experience significant hair loss, thinning hair, or the appearance of unusual bald patches, you should consult a dermatologist. A specialist can accurately identify the underlying cause and recommend an appropriate course of treatment.

When performing a scalp massage, use your fingertips to apply gentle pressure for at least 5 minutes per session, several times daily. Avoid harsh scratching or rubbing, as this can lead to more hair breakage and damage the scalp. You might also consider supplementing with natural essences such as cynatine, horsetail extract, and pumpkin seed, particularly for women. These nutrients help nourish and protect hair germ cells, promoting strong, shiny hair growth and reducing breakage.
