Kidney stones are a common ailment with significant health implications, but they can be prevented with a proper diet.
Master, Doctor Cao Thi Nhu from the Nephrology and Dialysis Center at Bach Mai Hospital, outlines 4 preventive measures:
Hydration is key. Drinking enough water is the simplest way to prevent kidney stones. Water dilutes urine, reducing the concentration of stone-forming substances and helping flush them out. Aim for 2-3 liters of water daily, spread throughout the day rather than waiting until you're thirsty. Choose plain or non-carbonated mineral water. Limit sugary drinks, sodas, and sugary juices.
Reduce salt intake. A low-salt diet helps reduce calcium in urine, lowering the risk of stone formation. Avoid fast food, processed foods, and canned goods, which are high in sodium. Carefully read food labels to ensure your sodium intake doesn't exceed 2,300 mg per day. Opt for natural seasonings like basil, rosemary, garlic, and chili to enhance flavor.
Limit animal protein. Consuming excessive protein from red meat, poultry, or fish increases the risk of kidney stones by raising uric acid and calcium levels in urine. Reduce animal protein and supplement with plant-based protein sources like beans, nuts, and soy. Plant-based proteins also provide fiber and other essential nutrients.
Increase citrate intake. Citrate, a natural compound, inhibits the crystallization of calcium and oxalate, the two main components of kidney stones. Citrate is abundant in citrus fruits like oranges, lemons, and grapefruits. Unsweetened lemon water or pure orange and grapefruit juice are beneficial choices.
