Tran Dinh Khiem, an 18-year-old student from Ninh Binh, was admitted to Hong Ngoc - Phuc Truong Minh General Hospital on 9/6 after a traffic accident. Khiem, who was on his way to complete procedures for his high school graduation exam, suffered severe pain and a deformed left thigh. Doctors quickly diagnosed a closed, displaced fracture of his left femur, a serious injury requiring immediate attention to prevent further complications like internal bleeding or nerve damage.
Following an interdisciplinary consultation, the hospital's medical team decided on emergency surgery. They opted for a closed intramedullary nailing method, which stabilizes the bone internally without opening the fracture site. This technique minimizes soft tissue damage, reduces post-operative pain, and promotes faster bone healing and early mobility.

Master, Doctor Truong Xuan Quang, from the Department of Orthopedic Trauma Surgery – Neurosurgery and Cranial Surgery, explained that this approach involved inserting the intramedullary nail through a lateral hip entry. Assisted by a C-arm machine, the team precisely reduced the fracture and stabilized Khiem's left femur in just over one hour. Post-surgery, Khiem was conscious with stable vital signs, able to sit up and perform light activities. He was discharged after one day, just in time for his high school graduation exam.

Before Khiem's discharge, doctors applied a temporary cast to prevent displacement during his movements. During the exam period, he needs to avoid putting weight on the injured leg, elevate it while testing, and refrain from strenuous activity. The family was also advised to monitor for any unusual signs, such as increased pain or swelling, and to seek re-examination if necessary. After the exam, Khiem will return for continued treatment and physical therapy to restore full range of motion and help him gradually resume normal activities.
