The decision, issued on 24/3, targets Nivea Extra Bright Night Nourish, a product distributed by Cong ty TNHH Beiersdorf Viet Nam, based in TP HCM. Authorities initiated the recall after discovering the product contained 0,1% Propylparaben, an ingredient not listed in its registered cosmetic declaration dossier.
Propylparaben is a common preservative widely used in the cosmetic and food industries to inhibit the growth of mold and bacteria. However, experts warn that its use without clear concentration levels, transparency, or exceeding permissible limits can pose health risks.
The Drug Administration of Vietnam has instructed all health departments to notify businesses and cosmetic users to immediately cease distributing and using the product. They are also to organize the recall and address any violations in accordance with regulations. Cong ty TNHH Beiersdorf Viet Nam must inform all distributors, accept returned products, and destroy all non-compliant batches. The company is required to submit a recall report to the Drug Administration of Vietnam by 20/4.
On the same day, the Drug Administration of Vietnam also revoked the cosmetic product declaration receipt number for Cong ty TNHH Beiersdorf Viet Nam and temporarily suspended the review and acceptance of its cosmetic product declaration dossiers for a period of 6 months.
Recently, regulatory agencies have ordered the recall of hundreds of cosmetic products due to incorrect declaration dossiers, quality deficiencies, or the inclusion of non-compliant ingredients. The latest such action involved the recall of a batch of Jane Ginger Orange Hand Wash (450 ml bottle) by the Drug Administration of Vietnam for violating ingredient declaration regulations.
Mr. Ta Manh Hung, Deputy Director of the Drug Administration of Vietnam, stated that recent cosmetic recalls reflect the agency's intensified efforts in controlling the quality of products on the market. Consequently, the recall rate for non-compliant cosmetic products has decreased to below 1,5% among more than 3,000 cosmetic samples collected by authorities for inspection.
The agency advises consumers to purchase medicines and cosmetics only from legal businesses with clear origins. Before use, consumers should check product information on the Drug Administration of Vietnam's official website.
