PhenikaaMec trains nearly 300 medical staff on disease coding

PhenikaaMec trains medical staff on disease and mortality coding according to ICD-10, aiming to standardize medical data and support digital transformation in healthcare.

On 26/6, Phenikaa University Hospital (PhenikaaMec) organized a continuous training course to implement Circular No. 06/2026/TT-BYT, issued by the Ministry of Health on 2/4/2026. This circular pertains to disease and mortality coding according to the World Health Organization's (WHO) International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision (ICD-10). The program attracted nearly 300 doctors, nurses, and medical staff, focusing on guiding the consistent application of ICD-10 in clinical practice. This initiative aims to improve the quality of medical data and meet the requirements for synchronized implementation across healthcare facilities.

Speaking at the program, Associate Professor, Doctor Nguyen Thanh Hoi, General Director of Phenikaa University Hospital and Dean of Phenikaa School of Medicine and Pharmacy (Phenikaa University), stated that accurate ICD-10 coding is essential for implementing interconnected electronic health records. It also supports health insurance payments and the management of medical examination and treatment data.

The training course, titled "Guidelines for Implementing Circular No. 06/2026/TT-BYT dated 2/4/2026 of the Ministry of Health on Disease and Mortality Coding according to ICD-10," was directly taught by PhenikaaMec's instructors. These included Doctor Dang Hong Nam, Assistant General Director and Head of the General Planning Department, and Master Ngo Thi Dieu Thuy, Assistant to the Chairman of the Board of Directors and Head of the Information Technology Department. According to the organizers, the program combined specialized knowledge with technology application in medical data management, enabling participants to grasp regulations and apply them in practice.

The training program covered: an overview of Circular No. 6 from the Ministry of Health regarding the structure and usage principles of the ICD-10 catalog; guidance on disease coding and medical record documentation; practical coding for each specialty; and methods for assessing the quality of medical record coding. Through theoretical and practical sessions, participants learned to identify primary diseases, comorbidities, complications, and sequelae according to regulations, enhancing consistency and accuracy in medical record keeping.

According to PhenikaaMec, correctly applying coding rules supports not only professional work but also medical statistics, healthcare management, and the development of a database for the healthcare sector's digital transformation. Upon completing the program, participants received a continuing medical education (CME) certificate.

A hospital representative stated that the training course is one of the activities aimed at enhancing the disease coding capabilities of medical staff. It also supports the implementation of new Ministry of Health regulations on standardizing medical examination and treatment data.

PhenikaaMec currently implements various digital solutions in hospital management, including a medical data management system and electronic invoice lookup. These aim to optimize operational processes, increase transparency, and support patients during medical examinations and treatments. According to the hospital, ICD-10 data standardization is crucial for developing electronic health records, improving healthcare governance quality, and enhancing patient care effectiveness.

In the future, the hospital will continue to invest in human resource development, promote technology application, and complete the digitalization of its data governance system. This aims to improve the quality of medical examination and treatment, placing patients at the center of its professional activities, and upholding the "innovation – creation – sustainability" spirit of Phenikaa Group.
